‘Women’s Participation and Leadership in DRR’ by UN India in collaboration with TISS and SEWA Mahila Trust

On 24 February 2023, United Nations (UN) in India in association with TISS and SEWA Mahila Trust organised a one-day National Multi-stakeholder Consultation (hybrid mode) on ‘Women’s Participation and Leadership in DRR’, at the request of National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) at We The People Hall, UN House, New Delhi.

Our Founder and Executive Director Nidhi Goyal participated in the consultation. It was a pre-event of the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (NPDRR) and key recommendations that emerged from this consultation will be shared with NIDM as the NPDRR Secretariat.

The consultation workshop deliberated on specific issues, as well as discussed good practices and opportunities around women’s role in disaster risk reduction (DRR) and resilience across the continuum of prevention, preparedness, response and recovery.

Stakeholders in the participation shared research, advocacy, policy and good practices from their programmes to frame comprehensive, contemporary and gender inclusive recommendations, a key need for leveraging the voice, capacities, leadership, and agency of women and women’s organisations. The consultation specifically focused on gender gaps in existing policies and frameworks, gender barriers in disaster risk reduction, good practices in gender responsive DRR as well as national priorities for gender responsive DRR. Nidhi focussed her contributions on the needs and recommendations from the standpoint of women with disabilities in India.
