Politics of Care

Our Founder and Executive Director Nidhi Goyal was a part of a panel “Politics of Care”, as part of an online symposium, “Practices and the Politics of Care and Disability in South Asia: Intersectional Perspectives” on 25th July, 2025, organised by Professor Shilpa Anand and Professor Meghana Rao. The panel was attended by 25 people in total, and Nidhi was joined by Nu Misra, founder of Revival Disability India, Soumya Mishra, The Red Door India x CREA Fellow, youth leader and podcast host of Atypical Dikkatein, and others.

In her abstract, Nidhi Goyal challenged dominant narratives that portray disabled people as passive recipients of care, highlighting the gendered burdens placed on non-disabled siblings, especially sisters. She critiqued protectionist caregiving practices that limit autonomy for women with disabilities and called for an enabling, compassionate, consent-based model of care. Nidhi also questioned why disabled people are rarely recognised as caregivers themselves, urging a shift toward care practices that respect agency and dignity.

The panel called for a reimagining of care: one that respects choice, enables independence, and acknowledges the full humanity of disabled people.
