Disability and Access to Culture; NUI Galway Centre of Disability Law and Policy

On the 25th of June 2020, NUI Galway Centre of Disability Law and Policy organised a webinar on Disability and Access to Culture. Founder and executive director, Nidhi Goyal, was invited as a panellist alongside Abigail Rekas, lecturer at the University of Augsburg and academic, influencer, activist and broadcaster Sinead Burke. Nidhi Goyal spoke about the massive disregard of recreational needs of persons with disabilities when it comes to designing activities such as the cinema experience, video games, sports, etc. Such experiences are not considered to be important in the hierarchy of needs of the disabled people as the discourse is still very much focused on the access to education, transport, healthcare, etc. Nidhi as well as the other panellists highlighted the importance of having inclusive recreational facilities especially in the time of the current COVID crises as things like video games and online streaming platforms many of which are inaccessible to people across disabilities.
