Implementing Accessibility Standards in Delhi’s Public Buildings

Our Founder and Executive Director Nidhi Goyal participated in a roundtable discussion, ‘Implementing Accessibility Standards in Delhi’s Public Buildings’. It was held in-person on 31st May, 2025 by Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, with 20 attendees present.

Nidhi pointed out that accessibility cannot be limited to building codes or physical infrastructure alone, that physical and digital access cannot be divorced from each other. Both must be considered together, especially for people with invisible disabilities, whose needs are often overlooked in mainstream policy and planning. She stressed the importance of co-creating inclusive definitions of accessibility that integrate safety, dignity, and usability, particularly for women with disabilities. She also highlighted the need to recognise people with disabilities as auditors of access, while calling for formal training and support systems, not just informal or experimental engagement. She raised the issue of conflicting access needs across different disability types and the necessity of designing with those tensions in mind. Importantly, Nidhi reminded the group not to overlook urban slums in accessibility discussions, reinforcing that truly inclusive urban access must leave no one behind.
