As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly central to our lives and has potential to drive inclusion when designed with intention, inaccessible AI systems and the lack of representation of persons with disabilities in AI design can deepen existing inequalities.
Recognising this, Apoorv Kulkarni, Expert – Artificial Intelligence Systems, Rising Flame authored a research paper which was accepted and published by T20 South Africa 2025 under the G20 process. This paper highlights the need for disability-inclusive AI development and governance. After an extensive review of international policy frameworks, documented case studies, and expert consultations, this policy brief presents recommendations to help the G20 advance disability-inclusive AI development and governance. It calls for a unified resolution on disability inclusive governance, fair representation of persons with disabilities in the AI governance and standard setting bodies. Emphasis on developing monitoring and measuring frameworks AI harms affecting persons with disabilities, capacity building for meaningful participation of persons with disability and disability organisations and establishing a transparent global knowledge platform dedicated to disability inclusive AI- to is suggested to ensure AI works for everyone, not just a few.
